This ambitious book by Greene (psychology, Harvard Univ.) begins with The Parable of the New Pastures, wherein four tribes, each with a different moral order, fight over a newly found pasture. The parable, a variation on Garrett Hardin's 1968 parable "The Tragedy of the Commons" (published in Science), illustrates the Tragedy of Commonsense Morality--morally inflexible groups engaged in escalating conflict. The book aims to show how deep moral disagreements among tribes might be resolved by grounding moral philosophy in the findings of contemporary social psychology and neuropsychology. Numerous experiments in these disciplines, many of them produced in Greene's own lab, reveal two radically different types of moral thinking manifested by the human brain: the automatic mode, based in the amygdala, and consisting of quick emotional responses that people have to situations they can imagine vividly; and the manual mode, consisting of reasoning processes that bypass one's gut feelings, and often provide better solutions to moral conflicts when empathy fails. Greene argues that tribes need to switch to manual mode and the most scientifically sound moral philosophy to ground that mode in a pragmatic utilitarianism cleared of mistaken criticisms.
